About College

The College of Agricultural Engineering and Post Harvest Technology is a constituent college of Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Manipur which was established in the year 2006 to address the issue of shortage of trained manpower (human resource) in the discipline of Agricultural Engineering besides issues, pertaining to natural resource management, farm mechanization, post-harvest technology, processing and value addition, utilization of renewable sources of energy, creation of agro-industries etc. in the NE region. The College is situated at Ranipool, Gangtok on National Highway NH 10 connecting Siliguri in West Bengal and Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The nearest broad gauge railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 120 km away, while the nearest airport is Bagdogra at about 124 km distance. The campus of college is spread over an area of 7.71 ha and located in mostly hilly terrain and sloppy and valley land at an altitude of approximately 914.4 m (3000 ft) above the mean sea level. The college buildings situated in the terraces and valleys and surrounded by rivers, provide an ideal atmosphere for academic and research activities.

The college is mandated to produce nationally and globally competitive graduates, post graduates and doctorates in the field of Agricultural Engineering (Farm Machinery & Power Engineering, Soil & Water Conservation Engineering, Processing & Food Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering and Irrigation & Drainage Engineering) and Food Technology. Besides, the college undertakes research and development activities to facilitate agricultural mechanization, land & water management, post harvest management and value addition of agriculture and horticulture produces, efficient utilization of renewable energy sources and engineering interventions in organic farming in the NEH region, in addition to information dissemination and technology transfer through training, demonstrations, prototype production and supply of equipment and agriculture business promotion through entrepreneurship development.

The college has six academic departments i.e. Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, Department of Renewable Energy Engineering, Department of Processing and Food Engineering, Department of Soil and Water Conservation Engineering, Department of Irrigation & Drainage Engineering and Department of Basic Engineering and Applied Sciences. The college offers two undergraduate degree programmes viz. B. Tech. in Agricultural Engineering, and in Food Technology, five post graduate M. Tech. degree programmes viz. M. Tech. in Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, Processing and Food Engineering, Soil and Water Conservation Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, Irrigation and Drainage Engineering and three Ph. D. degree programmes viz. in Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, Processing and Food Engineering and Soil and Water Conservation Engineering.

For effective delivery of knowledge to students, mostly belonging to different states of NEH region, the College has established 25 different laboratories, workshop and 15 pilot plants/facilities for experiential learning. The college is equipped with internet connectivity of 1GBps with wi-fi facility. The college library possesses 7572 books and text books including encyclopedias and non-book materials viz. CD, CD ROMs, Maps etc. The Library is subscribing 899 E-journals through DELCON consortium and CeRA (Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture) in addition to direct subscription of eight Indian and five international journals. The Computer Laboratory is equipped with 20 Computers with the facilities of LAN connection to each and every computer and the latest software of different courses related to the degree programmes.

College is actively engaged in the field of research and running several research projects funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA), Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Ministry of Agriculture, ICAR, Central Agricultural University (CAU) and other agencies. Presently 05 Externally funded research projects, 04 All India Coordinated Research Projects and 08 Intramural research projects are going on in the college. Total 09 externally funded research projects and 24 Intramural research projects have been successfully completed in the college. College have been developed/designed/designed refined more than 30 technologies/equipment (Manually operated tools/equipment-05, Animal operated farm equipment-12, Power operated equipment-06, Solar energy based technology/equipment-05, Biomass energy based equipment-05, Value Added Process and Products- 05 and Portable Manual Mulch laying Machine and low cost green house technology) suitable for the farmers of the north eastern region and particularly for the state of Sikkim.

The activities of Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC) in College were initiated in 2010-11 and during last five years many facilities have been developed for display of improved technologies including farm tools and equipment, products and processes. The ATIC of college, in absence of regular extension staff, has also been entrusted with publication, technology transfer and supply of input to farms/entrepreneurs. An agri-business center has also been established in the college. It has been planned to prepare video-films for depicting new technologies (relevant to Agricultural Engineering & Post Harvest Technology & utilization of renewable sources of energy) to the farmers. College has also organized and participated in the Kisanmela, Krishi Unnatimela, technology demonstration mela etc. and demonstrated the technology developed by this college. Till date college have organized 47 sensitization cum awareness programme for the farmers, 14 vocational trainings, 119 on farm trials/ FLDs, 95 trainings and 13 capacity building programmes. From all these about 4000 farmers have been benefited.

Students of this college have very bright future and passed out students from this college are well placed and actively working in the different fields throughout the country. Few students are taking the higher education in the reputed institutions of the country and abroad.
